The dumping of Sellecca finally is getting acknowledged by all the media only because the actress is filing a $1.5 million lawsuit against Columbia Pictures and producer Ed Weinberger. She claims that her dismissal was unjustified and illegal and that comedy veteran Weinberger was unnecessarily authoritarian and emotionally cruel. She also accuses Weinberger of threatening to blackball her in the TV industry. With the scheduled premiere of "Baby Talk" now pushed back till December, Weinberger and ABC are seeking a replacement-star. The leading contenders are Julia Duffy, who just wound up more than seven years on "Newhart," and Allison LaPlaca, the star of the recently canceled "Open House" on the Fox network.

Movie shows On TV GARY DEEB After four years of a three-way battle among movie-review programs, the Gene Siskel-Roger Ebert series is the only one still standing because the two competing film-critic shows, "At the Movies" and "Sneak Previews," officially have been canceled. "At the Movies," the syndicated package hosted by the grotesquely wrongheaded Rex Reed and Boston entertainment reporter Dixie 'True Colors' says nothing about interracial marriage Review By ROBERT BIANCO Scripps Howard News Service What's wrong with this sentence: "Fox's 'True Colors' is TV's first sitcom about an interracial BZZZZZZ! Time's up. All right, let's walk this through. "True Colors" is the first show to center on an interracial married couple the interracial pair in "'The Jeffersons'' were supporting characters, and the racially mixed couple in last year's "The Robert Guillaume were not married. And the "True Colors" couple is unquestionably racially mixed a black dentist married to a white kindergarten teacher.

The problem, quiz kids, is with that word "about." "True Colors" puss*foots SO tenderly around its racial divisions that it can't be said to be anything, other than about 23 minutes. It isn't bad it's harmless, reasonably wellacted, standard family sitcom fare but it's hardly groundbreaking. The show, which has a preview today at 7 p.m. before moving to its regular Sunday at 8:30 time slot next week, stars Frankie Faison and Stephanie Faracy as Ron and Ellen Freeman, two previously wed people whose new marriage has created an unwilling new family. Leading the naysayers are Ellen's mother Sara (Nancy Walker), who is so distressed by the marriage her main conversational topic is suicide.

That's just one Freeman fracas. Ellen's trendoid daughter Katie (Brigid Conley Walsh) fights with Ron's football star son Terry (Claude Brooks), perhaps Whatley, just got dumped in the wake of mass cancellations by stations across the country and significant dropouts by longtime advertisers. Even the program's home station -WGN-TV in Chicago had relegated "At the Movies" to an ignominious time slot within the Saturday morning kiddie lineup. Meanwhile, "Sneak Previews," hosted by the intellectually worthless Jeffrey Lyons and Hollywood movie buff Michael Medved, also is biting the dust. Produced by public, noncommercial TV, "Sneak Previews" suffered continually sliding audience ratings and a resultant lack of corporate funding.

The producing station, Chicago's WTTW-TV, is putting out a face story that the show might be revived next year, but inside sources agree that the program, in truth, is a dead mackerel. As for the "Siskel Ebert" series, that syndicated project continues rolling along, despite a 40 percent viewership dropoff in recent seasons. The program is fully bankrolled by Walt Disney Studios and remains marginally profitable. Dick Clark following Monday through Friday. music impresario, game show Nelson book Pop host and TV production mogul Dick A new biography of the late singer Clark is launching his newest deal and actor Rick Nelson characterizes a syndicated game show called "'The its subject as a man who never got Challengers," which most observers taken seriously as an artist because are tabbing as the best bet for sucof his childhood association with the cess among all rookie syndicated "Ozzie Harriet" TV series.

Author Joel Selvin credits Rick's music with programs. Family feud really starts Oct. 11 By PAUL LOMARTIRE Cox News Service Forget about the first head-to-head competition between "'The Simpsons'' and Cosby's family last Thursday. In that battle of rerun episodes, Cos won by five ratings points, about 4.5 million viewers. The real battle takes place Oct.

11 when "'The Simpsons" second season premiere runs. (Cosby's seventh season opener is Sept. 20) Any "Cosby" victories until then mean nothing because "'The Simpsons" 13 original episodes are each being repeated for a third time. What's "'The Simpsons" delay? It's because of the animation. If you added up all the hours involved producing one 30-minute episode, you'd total six months and involve dozens of workers in Los Angeles and in the animation mills of South Korea.

And even when Cliff Huxtable and Homer Simpson square off with fresh episodes Oct. 11, "Cosby" undoubtedly will win simply because NBC's 200-plus affiliated stations cover 100 percent of the country. The 129 Fox Network stations collectively reach about 90 percent of the country. "The Simpsons," that delightfully normal abnormal family, already has beaten "Cosby" in the hearts and minds of TV viewers. When's the last time the Cos was on the cover of "Newsweek?" When's the last time THE ISLAND THEATRE COLIGNY PLAZA 785-4468 785-4468 GHOST A PARAMOUNT PICTURE PG-13 you saw a kid on a skateboard wear- Matt Groening during a July press ing a Huxtable T-shirt? conference in Los Angeles.

because he makes fun of her involvement in SOPOWL Save Our Planet Or We're Leaving. Caught in the middle is Ron's street rapping younger son Lester (Adam Jeffries), whose main job is to keep Grandma Sara confused. Not a bad sitcom basis, but it could serve equally well for any sitcom about stepfamilies. And Sunday's plot is straight out of "Leave It to Beaver." Lester tries to save a live turkey from the dinner death bell. If you can look past a few abominable jokes (how can anyone mistake "barter" for a sexual you'll find quite a few that work.

The entire cast is fine, with Walker and Jeffries the standouts. In time, they could form a very funny comic patter relationship. And yet, for a show being so energetically promoted as a racial breakthrough, "True Colors" seems awfully anxious to look like a white middle-class sitcom. We're never told why Sara is SO antagonistic toward her son-inlaw. If it's race, as one assumes it is, why do the black men take her insults with such cheerful equanimity? I've heard about "rising above it," but these people are taking it to an unbelievable extreme.

Having a show in which racial differences are accepted without question is a worthy goal and would be fine if there were plenty of other shows dealing with racial divisions, or if this were truly a color-blind society. But there aren't and it isn't. As long as "True Colors" is the only show raising the issue, one wishes the producers actually would probe into it with a bit more depth, instead of churning out a '90s version of "Julia." I liked "Julia," too, but aren't we beyond that? As long as "The Simpsons" comes in second reasonably close to "Cosby," Fox is the winner. Based on demographics, "Cosby" can't touch "'The Simpsons." During the week of Aug. 6 to Aug.

12, "'The Simpsons" show was first with men 18-49 and second behind "Cheers" with women 18-49. "'Cosby" didn't make the top 20 men's list and was 10th with women in those age groups. That's the list from which ad dollars are derived. Marge will lead a protest against the ultra-violent "Itchy and Scratchy" cartoon show. Bald Homer will try a Minoxidillike product that immediately produces a flowing mane.

Next morning at work he's pegged as executive material and assigned a male secretary (played by Harvey Fierstein). Flashbacks will show us Marge and Homer's courtship. Bart will struggle to pass a crucial history test. Failure means repeating fourth grade. Coming up this season are 22 new A Halloween special will feature "Simpsons" episodes.
